Gerhard Koplin (known to most as Gary) died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Gary was born in Berlin, Germany and at the young age of 18 decided to pack his bags and make the long boat ride to Canada. He had several jobs across the country. He would often hear people speak of Vancouver, British Columbia “God’s country they would say” so much beauty there. In November 1955 he headed to Vancouver by bus. When he arrived, it was a beautiful sunny day the mountains were covered with snow, and he knew he was where he wanted to live for the rest of his life.
Three years after arriving in Canada he bought his first house a three-story home. Something he had dreamed about.
On April 29, 1959, he became a Canadian Citizen. In May he went to Berlin for an extended visit. In June he met Ursula and they were married in December and came back to Canada in January 1960. He became a Glazier and installed many windows, doors and mirrors in places all over the Lower Mainland. The Family moved to Coquitlam in January 1969. Life went on, many holidays, gardening and family events to keep him busy.
Gary was a very generous man and shared his love of gardening by donating his home-grown foods with the local food bank. He was thanked many times for his generosity.
Gary is survived by his wife Ursula, son Jim (Kathy), daughter Nancy (Chris) and his grandsons Craig (Elliot) and Richard (Emma).
There will be no Celebration of Life or Service as per his wishes.
Be kind and give back is what he would like.
