Gerald Franklin (Gerry) Magnuson

(January 29, 1938, to March 26, 2026)

Gerry was born near Maidstone, Saskatchewan, as the first of three children to George and Mabel Magnuson (née Gustin). Gerry’s father was a country schoolteacher, and the family moved around quite a bit before settling in Unity, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Marjorie (Ina) Campbell. They were married in Unity on July 8, 1957.

After graduating from high school in 1954 at the age of 16, Gerry dedicated the next 41 years to working for Federated Co-operatives Ltd. He started as an accountant, comptroller, and eventually became a General Manager, retiring from Nor-Isle Co-op in 1995 at the age of 57. Gerry’s career journey took him from Unity to Lloydminster, then to Winnipeg, where his daughter, Terry, was born, and back to Lloydminster, where his son, Curtis, was born. He also made moves to Craik, Stettler, and Edmonton. Gerry fulfilled his dream of moving west to BC in 1974, first settling in Port Alberni and then in Campbell River in 1982, where he retired.

Gerry was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Ina, and his nephew Nathan. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Terry (Frank) from Kirkland, Washington; his son Curtis (Gary) from Mission; his cherished grandchildren Emily and Alex Gilbert; and his dear friend Ivana Thulin from Campbell River. Gerry is also survived by his brother Gary (Phyllis) from Lloydminster, his sister Mavis (Alain) from Leduc, along with his nieces Kim (Jason), Danielle (Brian), and Alaina (Rob), and his nephew Cory (Tiara).

Early in his career, Gerry was part of Toastmasters and Lions International. In Campbell River, he dedicated over 20 years to the Canadian Cancer Society and more than 15 years to Campbell River Citizens on Patrol (COPS).

Gerry was always up for anything he put his heart into. He loved curling and found great happiness in water skiing and snow skiing, enjoying the outdoors in every season. As a keen fisher and traveler, Gerry loved spending time on the water, discovering new places, and sharing stories from his travels. He was a devoted dog lover, forming strong bonds with the dogs who were by his side through all stages of his life. Whether he was enjoying the excitement of sport, the tranquility of nature, or the simple joy of a loyal pet, Gerry approached his hobbies with enthusiasm and a sense of fun.

After nearly fifty years, Gerry moved closer to his children and their families, first to Agassiz Seniors Community, then settling at The Mayfair Seniors Living and Care in Abbotsford. During his time at Mayfair, which spanned over two years, Gerry received exceptional care from the wonderful nursing and care aide team on Three North. Our family will always be grateful to Papa’s incredible caregivers.

Gerry’s infectious laugh, playful spirit, and positive outlook on life will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Following cremation, Papa will return to Vancouver Island to reunite with his wife Ina at Rupert Inlet on northern Vancouver Island.
