Dixie (Ethel Beatrice) Mogg

May 5, 1932 – September 9, 2026

Born in Vancouver, BC, Dixie had a long, active, busy life. She lived in Surrey for 60 of her 94 years. Her last few years were spent fighting dementia & chronic heart disease. Even so, she continued to be the loving, generous woman she had always been.

After retiring from office life in 1999, Dixie was a very dynamic member of the Surrey Art Gallery Docents program, the Arthritis Society, the Surrey Emergency Response shortwave radio team, Newton Seniors Club & the LDS Church. She was extremely creative and enthusiastic about learning. She will be remembered for her magnificent pies; superb radio voice; decorations using both real and silk flowers; and her watercolours, especially the almost life-size camels painted and attached to wooden stands for the church nativity.

She loved presenting children's parties based on a variety of themes (Space, the Wild West, pirates, paper planes, etc.). Originally these were held at home for her own children's birthdays. Later she staged the parties in her yard or around the neighbourhood, or at local parks when the groups were larger (all the Sunday School children). She included simple props and costume pieces as well as themed snacks. For years, local children would knock at the door asking if Mrs. Mogg could come out to play.

Until 2024 Dixie happily played Mrs. Claus at the Newton Senior Centre Christmas luncheon. She moved from table to table, entertaining the crowd with seasonal riddles, games and songs as they waited for the food. After lunch she assisted Santa with delivering gifts.

She enjoyed finding treasures at the "VV Boutique", then tailoring the items to the intended recipient's exact measurements. Dixie's own wardrobe of lovely outfits and matching shoes overfilled multiple closets. Downsizing to relocate to smaller quarters took years of preparation and many painful struggles as she hated to part with anything.

Dixie was predeceased by many close friends and family members including her first husband, Richard Mogg, and her second husband, Derek Brown. Dixie & Derek were renowned dance partners at the FPO Elks Club in Bellingham.

Dixie is survived by her three children: Diane (Ken); Dann; & Darren (Debbie), as well as by her eight grandchildren & eight great-grandchildren.

Our thanks to all the staff at Normanna Care Home in Burnaby for their excellent support during Dixie's last 18 months.

In lieu of flowers please pass on a kind act to someone in need as that was always Dixie's way.
