No, you don't have to pre-pay to plan ahead. You're welcome to simply document your wishes and preferences with us at no cost, so your loved ones know exactly what you want when the time comes. However, if you choose to pre-pay, there are meaningful benefits: you lock in today's prices and protect your family from future cost increases due to inflation, and you relieve your executor and loved ones of the financial and emotional burden of making arrangements during an already difficult time. Our pre-payment plans are flexible — you can pay as a one-time lump sum or in instalments over 1 to 5 years — and your funds are protected through TruStage Life of Canada, backed by Assuris. There is absolutely no pressure either way; we're happy to walk you through both options so you can decide what's right for you.

Absolutely. Whether you choose a funeral service, celebration of life, witness cremation, graveside service, or memorial gathering, family and friends are welcome to attend. We work with you to create an event that suits your needs — from small, intimate family gatherings to large ceremonies. We can also help you find a venue in your community that fits the style and size of the gathering you have in mind. There's no requirement to hold a formal service, but if you'd like one, we'll help you plan every detail so the day feels meaningful and personal.

First, take a breath — we're here to help guide you through each step. What to do first depends on the circumstances:

• If the death was sudden or unexpected, call 911. The police and coroner will attend and determine next steps before the Alternatives can be contacted.
• If the death was expected and a Notification of Expected Death in the Home form was completed by the doctor, there is no need to call 911. You can contact us directly, and we will arrange to bring your loved one into our care.
• If the death was expected but no Expected Death form is on file, the doctor or a registered nurse will need to attend and pronounce death before the Alternatives can be called. Call us for advice on next steps.
• If the death occurred in a hospital, the hospital staff will shelter your loved one until arrangements are made with Alternatives. Call us for advice on next steps.
• If the death occurred in a care home or hospice, call Alternatives to arrange the transfer, as these facilities are unable to shelter your loved one on site.
