James Darryl McMartin

March 19, 1946 - June 19, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Darryl after a 4-year courageous battle with cancer. Darryl is survived by his wife Susan of 49 years, children Kim and Darren (wife Lisa), grandchildren Tyler and Emma, sister-in-law Dawn (husband Tim).

Darryl enjoyed tennis in Stanley Park, running, riding his bike, skiing, and golf.  His passion was golf. He started at the age of 12 by picking up golf balls at the driving range in Richmond where he was paid 5 cents for a full bucket.  He fondly remembered his 90-foot putt during a competition and winning the top prize. His golfing friends enjoyed playing with him as he was always positive, and they had many laughs.  His dream was to play at Pebble Beach.

Darryl loved the home he built and especially his backyard.  He could be found reading, gardening, playing games with the grandchildren in the pool or teaching them how to swim.

Darryl started roofing in 1962 when a hurricane struck the Vancouver area.  Darryl was paid $1 per hour and hustled to carry shingles up the ladder to the roof so when that job was done someone would show him how to nail the shingles on the roof.  He passed on his 50 plus years of experience to his son who now owns McMartin Roofing and has the same great work ethic as his father.

Susan and Darryl enjoyed many trips to El Centro, California in their RV.  In 2016 Darryl and Susan spent 4 months driving across the U.S.A.  They visited many great places, but Darryl's favorite was Key West. Darryl appreciated the many visits and phone calls from his friends.

Our thanks to M.A.i.D. for helping Darryl go peacefully in our home, on his terms, surrounded by his loving family.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Cancer Foundation or your favorite charity.

Darryl was an amazing man, and we are all fortunate to have known and loved him.

Celebration of Life will be held on July 16th, 2023, at 12470 57A Avenue, Surrey from 1-4.

Messages:

Very sorry to hear of Darryl’s passing. He was such a nice man! I will be forever grateful to him for explaining the condo roofing “system” to me. Take care Sue!

Darryl was a very good person,he is always smiling.we miss him as a good person.condolences to his wife Susan and their children and Relatives.

I met Darryl around 20 years ago and we met at one of the golf courses ,specifically the Delta Golf Course. I greatly learned from him every aspect of the game. He was a kind character and never had any arguments with anybody. Lately we played at Sunshine woods with a group of seniors like us, and more often than not, he got a few coins from me, as we played typically a quarter a hole. I am so glad I got to know him, and he will be missed dearly! I would like to extend my condolences to the family also...…I am sure one of these days I will meet him again, somewhere, as, being in my eighties, I am playing overtime. My friend, rest in peace!
