Herbert George Kindred

It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, and friend, Herbert George Kindred.  Herb died peacefully on October 16, 2020 at the age of 87 years.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years Frances Marie (nee McCullough) and his four sons Gregory, Norman (Jan), Thomas (Patti) and David as well as 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and his sister Edith (Reg) Boughen.  Herb was predeceased by his son Clinton and his parents Henry and Gladys Kindred. 

Herb was born on April 23, 1933 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where he spent most of his early years before graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan.

Upon receiving his engineering degree in 1956, he became a Refinery Engineer with Husky Oil and Refining.  In 1960 he joined British American Oil as an engineer at its Rimbey Gas Plant in Alberta. 

Due to the possibility of many moves in the Oil and Gas industry, Herb became a teacher with the Moose Jaw Public School Board.  Here he taught math, physics, chemistry and drafting until he was appointed as Director of Evening School and Principal of Summer School. 

In 1971 he was hired by the University of Regina where he became a Professor and the Dean of University Continuing Education from which he retired in 1995.  During this time Herb obtained a Master of Education from the University of Regina.

Herb held memberships in the University of Regina Senate, Board of Directors Route to Learning Canada, Saskatchewan Association of Life Long Learning, National University Continuing Education Association, Canadian Association of Distance Education, Canadian Association of University Continuing Education, Saskatchewan Building Officials Association, and Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists. 

Not a man to sit still, Herb also had numerous businesses with his family including the Great Skate Roller Rinks in Regina, Wascana Wheels which provided roller skates and tandem bikes in Wascana Park, and Professional Building Inspections which provided building code and pre-purchase home inspections.   He was also a conciliator for the New Home Warranty Program and appeared as an expert witness in many home building legal disputes.

Music was a big part of Herb’s life.  Except for a brief lapse in judgement, where he temporarily played a snare drum, he devoted his 70-year music virtuosity to playing the tuba.  He played in the Moose Jaw St. Andrews Boys Pipe Band, the Moose Jaw Army and Navy and Airforce Veterans Band, and the 20^th Armoured Military Band (Saskatchewan Dragoons Military Band).   While attending university he played with the Intensely Vigorous College Nine.  For many years he played Principal Tuba in the orchestra accompanying the yearly Moose Jaw Summer Exhibition and during the winter at the Moose Jaw skating rink.   When he moved to Regina, he joined the Lion’s Adult Band which eventually became the Prairie Winds Concert Band from which he retired in his early 80’s.  He was a guest soloist at a variety of events as well as an annual competitor at the Kinsmen International Band Festival. He is also the only known person to have marched in the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Band Parade every year from 1949 to 1994, even the year the parade was rained out.

Ever since Herb was a young child, he could always be found with a hammer or wrench in his hand building, destroying, and rebuilding things.  He patiently passed his automotive and construction skills onto his boys and together they jokingly referred to themselves as the “Hardly Able Construction Company”. 

Herb will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humour and manners which he gracefully displayed up until the last days of his passing.  Although we will greatly miss him, we will forever be grateful for all the hilarity and love he has brought into our lives.

A Celebration of Life, for registered guests, will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Resurrection Roman Catholic Church, Regina, Saskatchewan. Due to COVID restrictions we invite all others to attend Herb’s service virtually. It will be live streamed at https://livestream.com/accounts/17094656.  Following the Celebration of Life will be the Eulogy and a presentation. Private family interment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, Regina, Saskatchewan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herb’s name to two causes that were close to Herb’s heart - the Saskatchewan Band Association (https://www.saskband.org) or the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan (https://www.alzheimer.ca/sk/en/home).
