Marjorie Hockley

June 25th, 2019

Marjorie passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord, on June 25th 2019, at the age of 90.

Born in Strathmore Alberta, her family later moved to High River, Alberta. As a teen, while attending Bible School at the Prairie Bible Institute, Marjorie felt called to Missions work. At the age of 26, Marjorie traveled on a French cargo boat, to Cote D’ Ivoire (formerly known as the Ivory Coast), Africa to become a missionary with WEC International. She loved her work there and learned to speak several African languages.

Marjorie came home from Africa, 22 years later to take care of her parents and worked as home support for seniors in the White Rock area. Marjorie enjoyed volunteering with the “English As A Second Language” program (ESL) at White Rock Baptist Church, where she attended.

As a founding member of the White Rock division of the St John’s Ambulance, Marjorie was admitted to the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in a ceremony in Ottawa in 1985, invested by the former Gov. Gen. Jeanne Sauve, patron of the order, at the time. In a newspaper article it was noted: “Marjorie Garriott of White Rock was admitted to the British order of chivalry which exists throughout the Commonwealth. She was chosen to be a recipient based on her long record of service that began many years ago when she was a mission worker in Ivory Coast, West Africa.”

Marjorie is survived by her two brothers, Elmer and Marvin, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends throughout the country, whom she loved dearly.

She is predeceased by her husband George Hockley (whom she married at age 61), as well as her mother, father, brother Bob and sister Jean.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct 26, 2019 @ Evergreen Baptist Campus of Care Chapel, 1550 Oxford Street, White Rock, BC @ 2 PM.

Grateful thanks to the staff at Evergreen Campus of Care, as well as her doctors for their wonderful kindness and care. In lieu of flowers donations may be made directly to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence for the family.

Messages:

My sympathy is extended to the family on the passing of my cousin Marjorie last June. I recall happy times in Strathmore and High River and loved her sense of humor. Truly she gave much of herself in what she did for others and was rewarded with that special honor given to her. Last saw her when she and her hubby came to visit mom (Eileen) before she passed in 2006 and know that meant a lot to my mom. She was a fine, caring woman. I am sure her service will be a real tribute to her life. Love, Sylvia Warrington
