BIRD, Sylvia Alice

December 14, 1945 – April 25, 2022

A life rich with friends, family, love and laughter.

Sylvia passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital after a lengthly illness.

She was raised on the family farm near Cremona where she valued her roots, learned to be  good neighbor, and look after others. She completed her High School at Mount Royal College and went on to become the President of the first Foothills Hospital Nursing Class. Over the years she worked in several nursing specalties. A four year adventure to beautiful New Zealand found her helping with sheep shearing, waitressing, picking apples, nursing as well as exploring.

Back in Canada, Sylvia received her Diploma of Speech at Mount Royal College and worked with the Department for some time. She was house mother for six clients of the Vocational Rehab Center; sold Life Insurance; worked for 3M as a sales rep; sewed and hosted special dinners; loved the Arts and music; she embraced nature and loved to travel; and so much more. Through it all she always made time to help people through their tough times. A woman with a presence who engaged everyone around her and showed her huge heart!

As her health challenged her, she remained positive and optimistic.

Sylvia will be missed by her bother, Grant (Dorit); sister, Lillian (Bob Rehak); nephews and families, and many cousins. And so many faithful friends!! She was predeceased by her parents, Elma and Lionel Bird.

Sylvia was so grateful and we thank all the people who helped her through her health struggles. She received wonderful care by her many Doctors, the Home Care Team, as well as the Peter Lougheed Hospital Hematology Outpatient Clinis and Unit 38.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In memory of Sylvia, be kind and show respect to all others.

“I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now.”

As a nursing classmate of Sylvia's, I was always amazed at her resilience, big heart, determination, and willingness to help anyone and everyone....often in spite of her own health challenges. Her perseverance, energy, and spirit influenced so many in her life and she will never be forgotten! Warm condolences to her family.

We learned to much together! We tripped over one another along the way but we always had such a strong connection. I deeply loved our friendship and I will miss your big heart and generous nature. Love you ❤️

I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to all Sylvia's family as they mourn her loss. I hope the good memories will soon surpass the sorrow.

Sylvia was the first person I met when I moved to Calgary. As her room mate I saw firsthand her tender loving care of everyone around her. We called her Mother Sylvia and throughout her life she brought much laugher, love and solace to everyone who was lucky enough to enter her sphere of influence. A beautiful person, one of a kind, she will be very missed.

I knew Sylvia only a short while. She had a loving energy about her for all of life. That will be missed for everyone who knew her. My thoughts go out to all the family and close friends.

So sorry to hear this sad news. Sylvia will be missed by everyone she has known. Such a lovely friendly, kind lady. Lots of love to the Bird family x We are thinking about you all from New Zealand.

Sylvia - never has there been another with her heart, her mind, and her insight. All were her brothers and sisters yet Silvia was different from each. Sylvia was unique. I will miss her very much.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Sylvia. Sounds like she dedicated her life to serving others. Our condolences to her loved ones.
