Elizabeth Anne Dean

March 27th, 2020

It is with heartbreak and tears we announce the passing of Elizabeth Anne (Dungale) Dean, age 84 in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, March 27, 2020. Born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia on August 19, 1935, she was the youngest in her family but she was the matriarch of ours. Her family are all now reunited in the presence of our Lord. There are many words and phrases that described Mom; tenacious, loving, dedicated, gentle, honest, strong, fighter, generous, perfectionist, small but feisty, and above all else, loved her family. The word she would not let define her was scoliosis. From enduring many operations and surgeries in her childhood, to facing naysayers and doubters, Mom blazed her own trail of successes throughout her life. Professionally, she worked as a stenographer, financial clerk and student loan officer for the Government of Alberta.

Personally, she married the man of her dreams, Roy Elmer Dean (deceased), proudly raised 3 daughters and overlooked the upbringing of 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Medically, she surpassed the doctor's prognosis by 34 years. She left us on her terms, during a pandemic that never touched her. We miss her ferociously but know she will be guiding each of us as we learn to live in a world without her.

Elizabeth is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Cheryl (Blake) Weatherhead, Ecuador, South America, Karen Greiter, her caregiver and mainstay for the past 20 years, Calgary and Veronica (Laurence) Heinen, Calgary; her grandchildren, Becky, Tsawwassen B.C., Drew (Jillanna), Lacombe, AB, Evan (Jené), Calgary, Kelsey, Kamloops B.C. and Patricia, Abbottsford B.C. were the joy of her heart; her great-grandchildren were the jewels in her crown. G.G. stayed young watching the growth of Saida, Bree, Levi, Kade, Kyra, Jade, Gavin, Emma, Maëlle and Kaia. Special mention to Mom's next door neighbours Marg, who kept weekly “lively” conversations with Liz for over 50 years, and Weldon, who made it his mission to make sure mom was ok after dad passed away.

Due to the circumstances of the world today, there will not be a funeral service at this time. A Family Graveside Service via teleconferencing will take place, followed by a Celebration of Life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society (where her beloved Puff was adopted) would be welcomed by the family in remembrance of Elizabeth,  62 Griffin Industrial Point, Cochrane, AB T4C 0A3.
