LAUTNER, Edith Mary
October 02, 1925 ~ September 29, 2017

Mary passed away peaceful at home in Calgary, surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the age of 91, just 3 days before her 92nd birthday. Beloved wife of Nikolaus Lautner. Mary, as she liked to be called, was born 02-Oct-25 in York, England and arrived in Canada the Easter weekend of 1926. She arrived with her parents, Charles & Annie Sims, along with her older brother, Ronald and her sister, Winnie. Mary started her life in Canada on a soldier's settlement farm 6 1/2 miles east of Grande Prairie, AB in the Five Mile Creek area, where she began school. The family moved into Grande Prairie in 1946, where she finished school, married and gave birth to 4 children, 1 daughter and 3 sons.

Mary was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many capacities throughout her life. Her passions were, ALWAYS, quilting, family history, and gardening. She loved knitting, crocheting and all handiwork, but quilting, family history, and gardening were her favourites.  Mary sold knitted slippers for years to help supplement family income. She loved bright colors and her bright, cozy patchwork quilts are cherished and used daily by her loving family. Mary was a beautiful red head growing up and there were many gingers in the family, but in her latter years, Mary's hair turned a most beautiful shade of silver. Her only daughter Alice, styled her hair since Alice was 15 and became the family hairstylist.

Mary leaves to mourn her passing, her adoring husband, Nik and 2 surviving children, Alice Wagar of Calgary and Clifford Wagar of Redwater; as well as her 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of which reside in Alberta except for 1 grandson and 1 great grandson, who reside in Ontario. Mary is predeceased by 2 sons, Gordon Wagar of Edmonton and Kennith Wagar, also of Edmonton. Gordon, Mary's oldest son, passed away at the age of 50 years old and Kennith, Mary's youngest son who also passed away at 50.

A Public Visitation for family and friends, in Mary's honor will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 80 Michigan Street S., Devon, AB on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 10:00 am, followed by a Graveside Service in the Devon Cemetery where Mary will be laid to rest beside her son, Kennith.

Messages:

Aunt Mary was always one if my favourite aunt's. She was always caring and always there. I always enjoyed my visits to you and Uncle Nik. I love you Aunt Mary and am so much better off because you were in my life. I miss you and look forward to the day when we can once again talk and have fun together. I hope in heaven there is a place you can garden and I can stop by once in a while and help you weed and sneak a few peas and raspberries. Part of me wants to cry because I miss you, but another part is so happy knowing in a few years I will see you again. I look forward to that hug, and I am curious what you will have for me there to fix, paint, weed or whatever else. See you in a while Aunt Mary. I miss you and I Love you. Thank you again for being such a wonderful influence in my life and showing me the Love you did. Thank you also for marrying uncle Nik and bringing him into our family. I always loved spending time with the both of you. You were both such an important part of my life. I wish I could say why and how much you both mean to me but words just can't express the needed influence you both had in my life and what a difference you both made. Your home was often such a place of peace, safety and Live that I needed. I Love you both, Randy.
