Jean was born to Harry and Ethel Winter on April 1, 1926 in Olds, Alberta and grew up east of Olds in the Poplar Creek district. She attended school at Poplar Creek and then moved to Olds to finish and graduate from high school. She then taught school for a year at Poplar Creek.  Jean married Louis Taylor Latimer on December 3, 1945. They began farming together and soon moved to a ranch north of Sundre. About a year later land was purchased south of Olds and Jean and Louis began the journey to establish Remitall Cattle Company. Together they raised six children and built the business to become a successful and internationally respected purebred herd. Focus was on hard work and family participation. Jean worked in the farm office in addition to looking after kids, housework and cooking for family, employees and guests. In 1954 Jean and Louis formed a partnership with Louie’s brother Carroll and Jeannie which continued for twenty years. From 1960-1972 Jean and Louis, Carroll and Jeannie purchased the John Deere business ‘Yule & Latimer’ in Olds. Jean played an active role in the business, doing the accounting work in early years. Together with Louis many awards were received including the American Shorthorn Association Builder of the Breed, Alberta Angus Association Breeder of the Year, County of Mountain View Family Farm Award and the Bank of Montreal Family Farm Award. Jean was also an active member of the Olds Agricultural Society, serving as secretary for a lengthy time. She volunteered and served on board positions for the Coburn Women's Institute, Alberta Shorthorn Ladies Auxiliary, Hereford Belles, Youth Creative Arts Section of Olds Ag Society, Olds Figure Skating Club, and the Olds Red Hat Society.

Jean and Louis travelled to various countries around the world, promoting cattle, attending shows and touring herds. They in turn hosted many guests over the years, Jean always welcoming people with a meal, homemade pie and a place to stay. Jean and Louis were able to celebrate 65 years of marriage before Louis passed in 2010. Jean’s greatest joy was her family - children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family.  Family events and activities were always top priority. She formed special bonds with everyone by attending birthday parties, hockey, baseball, soccer games, dance recitals, plays, swim meets, cattle shows, trips and much more. Jean had a true love for reading and constantly had a book on the go. She also enjoyed playing bridge and in recent years found great pleasure and companionship in bridge groups twice a week.  Jean was vibrant and sharp witted with a great sense of humour and continued attending events, driving and living independently right up until her recent illness.

A Celebration of Jean's Life will be held at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites, 4601 – 46 Avenue, Olds, AB on Monday, May 29, 2017 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Olds Long Term Care Auxiliary, c/o Olds Hospital and Care Centre, 3901

Messages:

My sincerest sympathy to the Latimer family. A life well lived.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to all the members of the Latimer family. I know Jean's passing has left a huge hole in your hearts. We hope that knowing that she is now reunited with Louie will help in some small way. We will remember "Grandma Jean" for her gentle smile, soft voice and huge heart. Myrna particularly loved the fact that she could play bridge and she shared her love for cards with many of her grandchildren. This is a very special memory that they will always hold dear. We would just like to thank Marlene, Ian, Scott, Kerrie & extended family for including us in many of your family celebrations. We always looked forward to seeing Grandma Jean & sharing some wine. Cheers Jean, we will miss you. Love & condolences to all.

Dear "Latimer Family" Our deepest sympathies to all the Latimer Family in the loss of a truly remarkable lady. She touched the livest of so many of us. Our fond memories of Jean go back to Shorthorn days (and of course Hereford days). The Lasby Families (of Rockwood and Shelburne)

My sincerest condolences to all the family of Mrs. Latimer. She was a great lady and will be sadly missed. She was a great role model for all.

Wow what an amazing life she led! So sorry for your loss.

Dear Latimer family, we were saddened when we read the announcement of Jean's passing. We have enjoyed Jean and Louis's hospitality over the years, being at sales and shows and yes enjoying her homemade pies. We too have enjoyed listening to stories told by both Louis and Jean. The greatest memories were of the Olds fair days, the shows on the green grass. We all camped around and listened to stories, Hoss having fun doing the show announcing and enjoying playing with the kids. Great memories. Rest in peace Jean. We are sorry to say that we will not be able be there for the funeral as Hoss's health has been slipping and he does not feel the same anymore after being told he has subcortical dementia. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Hi Nancy and Marlene. My deepest condolences to you all. Moms are the catalyst of the family as well as the glue. Your mom sounded amazing to be so independent right up until she left you. A truly remarkable and enviable life who left behind a legacy of your wonderful family. I cannot make it to the funeral but will be sure to see you soon. Much Love, Rhonda.

To The 'Latimer' Family: We are think of the entire family. Jean was a kind, wonderful women. She never missed coming over and saying Hello to us and our family. You will miss her deeply. Our thoughts and prayers are with each and everyone of you. Sorry we will not be able to make the Service, as Ron has a medical appointment in Calgary that we can not change on Monday afternoon. We will be thinking of you, Ron & Renie Hanson

I had the pleasure to meet and enjoy the company of your Mun and Dad at Agribition, Canada, what a remarkable couple, I stood and listened and marvelled at the stories myself and Jack Henry were told, legends of their era, never tone equaled. Rest in Peace both.
