JOHNSON, Mary Ivy

Mary Ivy Johnson (nee Roberts) passed away peacefully in Carstairs, Alberta on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at the age of 73. Beloved wife of Jeffery Gary Johnson and proud mother of Caron (Laurence), Keri (Cyndi), Gareth (Melanie) and Rhys (Cassie); Mary was also a cherished grandmother to 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Born to Arthur and Sarah Roberts on December 14, 1943 at Lower Bungalow, Bushy Park, Pontypool, Mary was the youngest of 2 children and is survived by her sister, Patricia Watkins (John). Mary and Jeffery, along with their young family, left their home in Wales for Canada in 1972, eventually settling in the small town of Carstairs, Alberta.

Over the next 30 years Mary lovingly raised her family, while keeping herself involved in the workplace. In the late 1980’s Mary found her true calling and opened her home to other’s children becoming one of the first licensed day homes in our community. Over the next 22 years, many children and families came through Mary’s door and she often chuckled when a silly memory of one of them popped into her head. Mary loved sports and was often found as a young girl at the local “football game” or tennis court and if she wasn’t playing and trying to beat the boys, she was watching trying to find out how to beat them.

Upon arriving in Canada Mary quickly adopted a Great Canadian past time, hockey. If Mary wasn’t sitting in the stands watching her children and grandchildren play, she was yelling at her favorite team on the tele. Mary will always be remembered sitting in her favorite chair lovingly watching over her family.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Carstairs Bancroft United Church, 1204 Hammond Street, Carstairs, AB on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Mary’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #100, 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 1Z6 would be greatly appreciated.
