Michael John Edward Currie

CURRIE, Michael John Edward

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Michael John Edward Currie announce his passing at the age of 66. Mike passed peacefully with his wife by his side on April 5, 2017. He was born on December 6, 1950 in Galt, Ontario.  At 18 Mike joined the RCMP which took him to Kamloops, BC. This is where he met his wife and love of his life of almost 40 years. Winters of playing, coaching and watching hockey; Summers filled with camping, playing and umping slow pitch. Mike was a smartass but also a very happy, strong willed and stubborn man. Mike and Judy moved to Airdrie, AB in 2007 to be closer to their daughters, where he was able to relax and enjoy retirement.

Mike is lovingly remembered by his wife, Judy Currie (nee: Harris); daughters, Kyla (Airdrie, AB) and Tamara Currie (Pincher Creek, AB); two sons-in-law, Scott Burge (Edmonton, AB) and Ryan Robutka (Pincher Creek, AB); as well as his little granddaughter and light of his life, Molly Robutka (Pincher Creek, AB).  He was an amazing husband, father, Papa, friend and mentor for many people over the years.  His willingness to help anyone and commitment to family will always be strong traits that he will forever be remembered for.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2.

Messages:

Judy and family, I was so shocked and sorry to hear the news today. Mike was always one of my favourites to work with. As are you, Judy! I will never forget his smile and his laugh. And him shaking his fist in the air as I blasted past him on the highway - he always seemed to already have a car stopped when I went by. But he meant it when he said he would be out there waiting for me!

Judy and Family, We wish to express our deepest sympathies to you and your family. We knew Mike for only a few years, but he certainly left an impression. Even though we haven't been in touch for years, I have been thinking of Mike a lot lately. Hopefully, he did not suffer with his cancer. May he rest in peace. Go Oilers go! (that should make him agitated, wherever he may be) Again, our sympathies to you and your family, Darlene and John

My dearest friend Judy, I am so very blessed to have known Mike and to be in your life. I feel honoured to have met him and to be here for you now. I will be here for all of you today and always. Love Lynn, Patrick and Family

Found out yesterday of your passing my dear friend. The news ripped through my heart, feels like a part of me is also gone. Judy , Kyla, Tamara..........my warmest condolences. I miss you already Mikey. God Bless you my friend. Luigi

Very sorry to learn about Mike, and your loss, Judy and everyone's loss. Nothing is forever but this was much too soon. Mike and I were the same age and service - but he seemed to have another level of energy back when our work was still a fun place to go. I have a nice photo of Mike from 1976 which I would like you to have. Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time. Take care. Bob and Lynne

Our thoughts and sympathy go out to the Currie family during this time of sadness. Mike was always a "breath of fresh air" wherever you found him. He coached our son Adam Giesbrecht in minor hockey in the Comox Valley. His influence found Adam finding his own career in the RCMP years later. He was ever a "community man", both in his job as a policeman and guiding youngsters as a coach. Many people are indebted to his dedication and thoughtfulness.
