Katie Norma Symon

October 13th, 2011

Katie (Kay) was born on April 26, 1926, in Sibbald, Alberta and resided in Alsask, Saskatchewan, and passed away peacefully on October 13, 2011 in Calgary.  She was one of 7 children born to Ethel and Dan Schmidt. Kay graduated from the Calgary General Hospital in 1949 and nursed in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver. She married Jim Symon in 1956 and they lived in Calgary until 1982, when they moved to Carstairs. Kay moved back to Calgary in 2006. Kay loved to spend time with family and friends, and was an excellent cook and gardener.  She spent  many hours during her lifetime volunteering in Calgary and Carstairs.  She was proud of all her grandchildren and their accomplishments, and spent time creating memories for each of them to treasure. She was especially proud of her association with the Calgary General Hospital and the nursing profession and attended the alumni banquet each year.

Kay was gracious, generous, and always put others ahead of herself. Kay is survived by her children Leslie (Howard) Warren, Grant (Maureen) Symon, Sheri (Myke) Balla and 10 grandchildren; Brent, Scott, Carrie, Michelle, Lauren, Nick, Ethan, Ryan, Kyle and Danielle. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ann Smith.  Kay was predeceased by her husband Jim in 2005.

A Memorial Service will be held at Carstairs Church of God,  10th Avenue  and Gray Street  on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 1:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to The University of Calgary, CGH Bursary Fund, Development Office, 2500 University Drive N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2N 1N4.

Messages:

Grant and Leslie I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. I have many fond memories of time spent at your home on Blackthorn Road growing up. She made your home a very welcoming place. I wish I could be in Carstairs to help pay respects on behalf of the Dyte family but unfortunately business precludes me from traveling tomorrow. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take care. Kerry Dyte
