SHANNON, Laurence Arnold

1935-2022

Born in Rahab, Alberta on September 1, 1935 to Raymond and Esther Shannon, Laurence was the middle of five children. He grew up in the Eaglesham area and was educated at the Fox Creek School and then attended the Spirit River High School. Laurence later settled in Grande Prairie, where he met his wife, Marge. They were married on September 23, 1972 and had two children, Samantha and Kane.

Laurence spent 1960-1992 with ATCO Power, first as a Lineman and then later as a Construction and Maintenance Supervisor. After an early retirement, he went to work at Happy Trails RV, from 1997-2011, as a Salesman then General Manager.

He had a passion for restoring antique cars and owned many throughout his lifetime. Laurence also had a real love for travel and spent each summer camping in the Okanagan with his family and then later travelling extensively to the US, Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico. He and Marge spent the last 17 winters in Mazatlan, Mexico. In 2011, they moved to Airdrie, AB to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Being near and caring for them, was his absolute greatest pleasure.

Laurence is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marge; sister, Jermaine Wunderly; brother, Jerry Shannon; daughter, Samantha (Scott) McGarty; son, Kane (Candice) Shannon; grandchildren, Nolan & Myla McGarty and Wil and Raylene Shannon. He was predeceased by his brother, Dave Shannon; sister, Ardis Suek; and brothers-in-law, George Wunderly and Ralph Suek. He will be greatly missed by many dear friends, family and colleagues.

Laurence passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 3, 2022.

A Celebration of Life honouring Laurence is scheduled in the coming week and attendees will be notified by invitation.

My deepest sincere sympathies! To Marge, and family.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I have many great memories of the good times we had together.

Sending my condolences to you Marge and family

We are thinking of you, Marge and family, and remembering him. We remember Laurence best for his quiet, cheerful demeanor and his humor-filled wit usually followed by his beaming smile and a chuckle. I think he enjoyed his witty remarks as much as we did. You, as his family, are fortunate to have many happy, loving memories not only to remember him by but also to share with each other. In the end, that's the best anyone can hope for. As Clarence, the angel, would say, "He had a wonderful life."

So sorry to hear about Laurence's passing. I miss all our wonderful times in Mazatlan, Mexico. We all had such good times. Sending sincere sympathy to Marge and family. Love, Anne DeRoche

Dear Marge, Am so sad to see Laurence's obituary, and to know that you have lost your life-partner! There will be a huge hole in your life now, but it is good that you live reasonably close to your family. There are no words to lessen the sorrow that you have, but there are many good times to remember. My love and deepest sympathy to you, and to Samantha and Kane, and their families too. Janet Jones.

Sorry to hear of Laurence's passing. Condolences to you Marge and your family.

I new Lawrence as a person of knowing all about his fellow employees. My condolences to Marge and family.

Our condolences to the Shannon family at this sad time in our lives. I worked with Lawrence for my entire 37 year career with Alberta Power and Atco Electric. He was a great fellow worker, friend and person to be around. He will be missed by us all. Rest in peace Laurence.

My condolences, I worked with Lawrence in Grande Prairie, in the 60’s. He was a great coworker.

Very sorry to hear of Lawrence passing. I well remember working with him around Grande Prairie in the early seventies when he was a serviceman. I learned so much from Lawrence and so remember his dry witty sense of humour. My condolences to Marge and family.

My condolences to you, Marge and your family.

Uncle Laurence was a wonderful Uncle, and I enjoyed our time together, from their wedding day (when I was a young fella) up until our last lunch together a little over a month ago. His dry, sarcastic wit and Shannon Humour shall be missed. RIP Uncle Laurence. Much Love from your Nephew Todd.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Marge and family. We were shocked to hear about Laurence as he was always out and about tending to his yard. All the best to the family.

Laurence will be remembered for so many things but most of all his loyalty to his family. His love for his children and grandchildren shone through with his action. The gleam in his eyes told the whole story about his devotion to his family. As a long time friend, to me, Laurence was generous, patient, meticulous, quiet and respectful. He shared his knowledge and helped me out whenever we were together like fixing little things around the house, checking out my car and tires, pointing out things in the yard. He really did take time to be helpful. I loved his sense of humour and his smile was one of mischief and joy. There are so many wonderful memories I will cherish from the five decades of friendship we shared. Marge, Sam and Scott and Kane and Candice and your precious children, you have my sincerest sympathy as you grieve the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and gentle man. Love to all of you.

My condolences to the family. I worked with Lawrence he was my supervisor and really enjoyed working with him

Wishing you all our most sincere condolences. Laurence was such a nice man with a great wit and sense of humour. We will miss him and hope you find comfort in the memories and each other.
