HAVENS, Richard Charles “Dick”

August 16, 2022

Our father, grandfather and great grandfather, Richard Charles Havens (Dick) passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at the age of 93 years. Dick was born on March 17, 1929 in Madden, AB, and was the only child to Ray and Martha (Walsh) Havens.

Dick attended school at Beaver Dam and went on to study at Olds Agricultural College. While in Olds he played hockey on the College team, where his love of sports formed. Dicks rodeo career started at the age of 16 when he mounted his first bronc at the Dog Pound Stampede. Over his rodeo career, he rode several times at the Calgary Stampede and became a Canadian Champion Bareback Rider. He continued to ride bareback horses for 22 years and his love of rodeo continued throughout his life.

Dick married his soulmate, Clara Hale, on November 23, 1951. They together had 3 children, Reba, Raymond and Connie. They lived, loved and ranched together on the farm at Madden for over 30 years. Dick loved spending time with his friends and family in his retirement. He was often found doing a round of golf with his friends, right up until he was 92 years old. He would never shy away from a game of poker or crib with buddies, especially if there was a bet involved. Dick and Clara also escaped the winters to Phoenix, Arizona where they golfed, relaxed and visited with friends.

Dick loved to watch his kids and grandkids in their various sports and rodeo events. He was always so proud of his families accomplishments. He spent his last days doing what matters most, spending time and visiting with his loved ones.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Reba (Murray) Taks, and their children, Julie, Ryan (Kendra) and Kevin (Amy); Raymond (Liz) Havens and their children, Blaine (Pam), Jeff (Penny) and Cody; Connie (Ron) Randall and their child, Dana. He also has 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years, Clara in September 2020; his parents, Ray (1954) and Martha (2002); and his special cousin, Lou Cairns (2017).

A Celebration of Life for Dick & Clara will be held at Madden Community Hall on Monday, August 29, 2022 at 2:00PM.

Our condolences to Reba & Murray, Raymond and Liz, Connie and Ron and their families. We have good memories of Dick and Clara, especially the first time I (Darlene) and Jack went to Phoenix, Dick and Clara hitched a ride with us..it was quite a fun time. We know they will be missed by many and always remembered in your hearts.

Our deepest sympathy with this loss. We were fortunate to see him one last time a few weeks ago. Rest in peace mr. Havens. It was a pleasure knowing you. Willian Verhees John Rasmussen Laurent and Florence. Holland.

When I arrived in Crossfield in the early 1980s to work at Davis-Rairdan, Dick was one of the first clients I met. I quickly learned how he loved to tease! Living with Connie on the farm, Dick and Clara treated me like family. I was fortunate to visit with Dick last December, when we reminisced and laughed. His sense of humour was intact!! My deepest condolences to Connie, Ron and Dana, and all of the Havens clan. He will be missed.

So sorry to hear of the loss of you dad, Reba, Raymond and Connie and families. He was a gentleman and a great man. It is a great loss to lose one’s parents. Our deepest sympathies are with you. ❤️❤️❤️ Gary & Donna

My heart aches for the Haven family. We are never ready to say goodbye to anyone, it does ease when you talk about all those years filled with memories. Gone but never forgotten. Love Bev
