Vicki Leona Kwong

February 15th, 2024

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce that Vicki Leona Kwong (Whitter) passed away on the morning of February 15th, 2024 at Vancouver General Hospital. She leaves behind her life partner Hugo Landry as well as her sister Marnie Whitter Gobin, brother-in-law Glenn Gobin and nephew Tyler Gobin.

Despite her disability, Vicki was known for her amazing strength and resilience, which drove her to perform, impress and overachieve in anything she touched.

Vicki loved learning new skills, teaching and helping others in need. She also enjoyed travelling the world, volunteering, cooking and going to concerts, all of which brought much joy and purpose in her life.

“That spark!” everyone would say; Vicki was so full of enthusiasm, energy and passion for life. She had an infectious smile and her friendliness, joie de vivre and sense of humour made people gravitate towards her. Vicki had an upbeat and positive outlook on life despite not knowing how long she would be with us. This gave her the determination to live every day in the moment and to the fullest. Vicki truly was larger than life.

Your spark ignited and illuminated our hearts; you were an inspiration to us all.

Your light will forever shine brightly on the people you touched in your short journey among us.

A celebration of Vicki’s life will be held on Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at 1 PM at the Executive Plaza Hotel, 405 North Road #1, Coquitlam, BC V3K 3V9.

A donation to Muscular Dystrophy Canada in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.

Messages:

Vicki was such a dynamo and was inspirational in my role as a shop steward…but more than that she was such a wonderful person to connect with. One of my favourite memories is from a union activist banquet and she danced the night away with a ginormous Afro on. My sincere condolences to all her family and friends, but take comfort in knowing that she has left an indelible mark on us all.

I was shocked to hear just yesterday that Vickie had passed. Unfortunately, that meant I was not able to attend her celebration of life. I smile when I think about her and her wicked sense of fashion. There was nothing ordinary about her. She was buying a car from me once and assisted that she wasn't driving something "boring", just because she was a wheelchair user. Condolences to the family.

My heart goes out to Vicki's family, friends, and colleagues. Vicki was such a wonderful and beautiful person, and she will be dearly missed. Her passion to share her knowledge with the community was infectious and inspiring. It was always such a pleasure to talk to her whenever we got a chance and always with such beautiful makeup as well. She touched many lives and I know so many of us have great memories of her. Condolences to all. Thanks for your smiles, Vicki. ♥

Our hearts go out to everyone who has had the pleasure to meet and know Vicki. Words cannot express the loss felt by all who knew her. Vicki was a strong force, a committed individual who chose to empower others. Vicki did not shy away from conflict, she was clear and direct as well as compassionate and passionate. Vicki was innovative, welcoming, engaging, caring individual who was the vice-president with the now closed Vancouver Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Vicki convinced many to raised funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Vicki grew within the racks of VanCity (bank) and her face was in their commercials. Vicki will be missed.
