Charles Frederick Brawn

August 24. 1929 – November 27, 2021

The Family and Friends of Charlie Brawn would like to announce his passing on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Points West Living, Red Deer.

Charles (Charlie) Brawn was born in Carnduff, Saskatchewan and was raised near the community district of Nottingham, Saskatchewan. During his colourful lifetime he lived in a number of places. Time spent with Charlie was filled with stories and recounting about the many towns in Saskatchewan which are now just names on a map. Eventually he moved to Red Deer, Alberta from Saskatchewan where he had a trucking business in the oil patch. The long hours and working hard, is what he knew best.

Charlie was very enthusiastic about country music. He collected music and the history of musicians, especially from the 1950’s. Charlie never

missed an opportunity to jam with other musicians. He hosted numerous musicals get togethers at his home in Red Deer. Charlie played dobro, harmonica, acoustic guitar, button accordion and banjo. When Charlie transitioned into Senior’s living, he continued to invite his musician friends to get together and share music. Nothing made Charlie happier than to have his friends around him to celebrate his birthday with music and song! Many, many songs he loved but one of his favourite songs was precious jewel by Roy Acuff.  Play the song on the computer, In memory of Charlie.

Charlie was one of the individuals who was instrumental in forming the Waskasoo Bluegrass Society in the late 1990’s. He managed jams at the Downtown House in Red Deer for many years. Charlie’s favourite song was Precious Jewel. Charlie was so dedicated and a supporter to the country music that he had a dream to build a Country Hall of Fame Museum for the Alberta Musicians. Maybe someday this will happen and Charlie would be Proud.

Along with his love of music Charlie was an avid historian regarding farming and vintage farm machinery used on the Prairies. How his passion started on collecting the vintage miniature toys was when he went over to a collector’s home and seen his grandchild playing with a John Deere tractor, from then on Charlie was hooked.  If you seen a fellow at a trade show with a western hat and a big grin on his face, willing to shake your hand it was probably Charlie Brawn from Red Deer. His squeezebox in hand and playing for us. From that day on a friendship grew. He even had Full size tractors too! A collector of his prized possessions including the oilfield decal stickers frenzy in the 80’s. Charlie collected and built an extensive farm toy collection. His replicas of farm machinery and trucks contained intricate details.  He also made model villages and farmyards as settings for the replicas. At one time he had one of the largest collections in North America. He bought, sold and traded more models than any collector. Charlie often showcased his collection at Sunnybrook Farm and the Agri-Trade at the Westerner Park in Red Deer. Charlie was a horse trader or should we say a model trader.

Charlie just recently received Honorary “Senior of the Year” for his years of volunteerism and many other contributions to the community of Red Deer. Very proud day for him surrounded by friends. Charlie had a heart of gold to whom ever needed a helping hand, he was there to help. He was a wealth of knowledge, understanding and always had a story to tell that was entertaining.

Charlie was everyone’s friend and he would talk to anyone. He had his Tim Horton buddies, coffee and sprinkled donut were waiting for him. He loved his Taber corn and couldn’t wait for the season to roll around for the taste of Alberta Corn.

Charlie is now looking over his large collection of models with that big grin on his face and likely horse trading again with someone.

Charlie was always kind and generous. He will be greatly missed. Even now he is probably arranging a music jam just inside the Pearly Gates.

Thanks to every one who made special memories throughout his 92 years of living.

He was such a good friend to so many of us. All your friends will miss you Charlie but we will remember you always forever you were a true friend.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Please be mindful with all Covid rules for social distancing and wear a mask if you wish. Thank you

He was always glad to see other musicians, as well as anyone who shared an interest in his many instruments, gadgets, models and displays, and he always had new stories to tell about his full and colourful life.
