On Sunday, August 2, 2020, Paul Sidney Porter passed away peacefully at Hospice in Kamloops, BC.
Paul was born in 1952 in Vancouver, BC, son of Sid and Lil Porter. He was a beloved husband to Diana, devoted father to Julia (Chris) and Graham, loving granddad to Nolan, and supportive brother to Lesley.
Paul attended St. Anthony’s Elementary and West Vancouver Secondary Schools. Paul received his degree in theatre and completed his teacher training at UBC. He moved to Kamloops to begin his career in 1977. In 1979 Paul and Diana began their married life together in Kamloops, where they taught in the Kamloops School District, and raised their two wonderful children.
Paul was a man of many interests. In his early days he was involved in theatre, while staying fit with cross country skiing, tennis and mountain biking. In his later years, Paul became very involved in technology and played guitar with his usual enthusiasm.
Paul will always be remembered for his solid loyalty, dry sense of humour and for being a trusted and devoted friend. He will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Society of BC, or to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice would be much appreciated.
Dearest Diana- I only learned today of Paul’s passing 2 years ago. I am so very sorry to hear this. He was a lovely man. I am sending my love to you and your family across the miles. I will try and locate you via Facebook or the old fashion Ed telephone directory. In the meantime, much love.
I am so sorry to hear of Mr.Porter’s passing. I was a student of his in the 80/81 and 81/82 school years at Brock. I was so fortunate to have him as a teacher and he was a large influence in my decision to become a drama teacher. For 30 years I have been involved in education and have loved it! I have often shared my memories of playing Annie Sullivan in “The Miracle Worker” ”when I was in grade 10, directed by Mr .Porter. I see the other comments about him being an inspirational teacher and lover of the arts - which he clearly passed on to so many of us. That is the power of a GREAT teacher!!
Diana and family, I was saddened to read that Paul passed away. While I didn’t know him, you were always special in our minds and we know so well how precious a husband and dad can be. Our deepest condolences, The Brookes Family
I was saddened to read of Paul’s passing. He was truly my inspiration for becoming a teacher myself, and the catalyst for my life-long love of Theatre. If I have inspired any of my students during my 32-year career as Paul’s passion inspired me, then I know I have been successful, and you know that Paul’s legacy has lived on through me. Thank you, Paul, for giving my life such meaning.
Very sorry to hear of Paul’s passing, our condolences to you Diana , Julia and Graham and all extended family. You guys were a wonderful little family to have as our neighbours while our kids grew up on Garibaldi Drive.
Both of us had the pleasure of working with Paul at Brock Secondary (John) and @Kool (Jean). He was a man of many talents, and he never stopped in pursuit of new paths in education and in life. Drama teacher, computer tech, fly fisherman, skier, biker and brew master. His dry sense of humour kept us both laughing when we worked with him. Our sincere condolences Diana and family. He will be missed.
I’m so sad to hear of Mr Porter’s passing. I had instruction from him every year I attended Brock from Fall 1987 to Summer 1992. He always was encouraging, engaging, and obviously loved what he did. He gave me an appreciation of theatre, literature, and performance that I have carried all of my life, and I will continue to. My deepest condolences to his family and friends, we were blessed to know him.
Very influential in my education, thank you
Diana, I am so very sorry to read of Paul’s passing. Although he and I never met, I remember many stories of him that you told me when we were together in the Education Program at UBC all those years ago. You and I were two newly-engaged girls, madly in love and ready to tackle the world! My loving thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! Marilyn (Phelps) Blouin
Our deepest condolences to Diana and the family. I have fond memories of working with Paul at Brocklehurst Secondary. Not only did he oversee our drama program, but was also instrumental in helping us in the early days of technology in education. He will be missed. Reno and Marie Fabbro
