Government of Alberta - Alberta Human Services or AISH (financial assistance for funeral costs)
To ensure deceased persons are given a proper burial or cremation where the estate or responsible survivors are unable to pay for funeral services.
The program provides basic funeral services for indigent persons who die or are transported to Alberta for burial or cremationm. Basic funeral services are provided for under an Agreement with funeral homes in Alberta.
A funeral home that agrees to provide this service must:
- be licensed by the Alberta Funeral Service Regulatory Board;
- have a signed Agreement with Alberta Human Services and appear on the funeral home list of approved vendors;
- abide by the Agreement’s terms and conditions
- have funeral expenses pre-authorized by an Alberta Human Services representative.

The funeral director will need to fill out the forms and it will be determined by the Government of Alberta what amount is eligible to be covered.
Canada Pension Plan Benefits
Canada Pension Plan survivor benefits are paid to a deceased contributor's estate, surviving spouse or common-law partner and dependent children. There are three types of benefits.
- The death benefit is a one-time payment to, or on behalf of, the estate of a deceased Canada Pension Plan contributor;
- The survivor's pension is a monthly pension paid to the surviving spouse or common-law partner of a deceased contributor;
- The children's benefit is a monthly benefit for dependent children of a deceased contributor.
It is important to apply for Canada Pension Plan benefits. If you do not apply, you may lose benefits you are entitled to receive.
Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee of Alberta
Alberta's Office of the Public Trustee protects the financial interests of vulnerable Albertans by administering the estates of represented adults, deceased persons and minors when there is no one else to act.
WCB Alberta (Workers’ Compensation Board - Alberta)
When a work-related fatality occurs, the worker’s dependant spouse or adult interdependent partner may be entitled to benefits. Dependent children living with the spouse or partner are included within these benefits.
Victims of Crime
The Victims of Crime Financial Benefit Program provides a death benefit to eligible victims that have died of violent crime in Alberta. This benefit may be claimed by the person who has paid for these costs. For more information visit their website or to file an application, visit their website.
Last Post Fund
The Last Post Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that no veteran is denied a dignified funeral and burial due to insufficient funds.
The Last Post Fund delivers the Veterans Affairs Canada Funeral and Burial Program which provides funeral, burial and grave marking benefits for eligible Canadian and Allied veterans.
In addition to delivering the Funeral and Burial Program, the Last Post Fund supports several other initiatives to commemorate Canadian veterans, including its own military cemetery, the National Field of Honour, and the provision of military markers for unmarked veterans’ graves.
The Last Post Fund is supported financially by Veterans Affairs Canada and by private donations. Its National Office is in Montreal, Québec with representation in every province and the United Kingdom.
For 100 years, the Last Post Fund has ensured that no eligible Veteran is deprived of a dignified funeral, burial and headstone for a lack of financial resources. Its chief mandate is to administer the Funeral and Burial Program on behalf of Veterans Affairs Canada.
