It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Vern Smith of Kamloops on August 17, 2022, at the age of 62 following a stroke. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years Patricia and daughters Savannah and Robyn of Kamloops. As well as brothers Pat (Sherry) Smith of Zeballos, Candy (John) Truscott of Cornwall Mountain, David Smith of Barriere, Larry (Susan) Smith of Armstrong, and Dan (Debbie) Smith of Kamloops. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur & Caroline Smith and his brother Lenard Smith.
In 1980, following a term in the Canadian Armed Forces as a member of the Princess Patricia Light Infantry, Joe met Patty and they were together for the next 42 years. Joe and Patty married in Ashcroft on December 10th, 1982, on December 11th, 1984, they welcomed their first daughter Savannah. On December 3rd, 1986, they welcomed their second daughter Robyn. The family lived in Logan Lake until June 1993 when they moved to Kamloops where they remain.
Joe spent many years working long hours to provide for his family. He worked as a ranch hand, logger, heavy duty mechanic, and finally as a truck driver. He needed to stay busy and developed an interest in CNC plasma cutting. Over the years he started a side business with Patty where they created metal art, that they sold together at craft sales. His work hangs in many homes, not only in the surrounding area, but also around the world.
The family would like the thank the wonderful ICU staff at Kelowna General Hospital particular Jocelyn, who was there with the family to the very end. The family would also like to thank Reg, Fred and Noreen Pain of Lazy FD Ranch for their kindness and support over the years, especially in this difficult time.
A memorial service will be held on August 28, 2022, from 1pm-3pm at the Knutsford Community Center. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his name.

Patricia Smith and Family - I write to express to you and your family the sincere condolences of the Patricia’s on the passing of Joseph Smith. His service with the Regiment was not long, but once a Patricia, always a Patricia is a creed we hold tightly to. The Regiment remembers Joseph's service, and you and your family I am sure are proud of that service. His name will be read in this year’s list of the lost when we read that out on November 11th, 2022 in the Sacred Space in Beechwood, the National Military Cemetery, Ottawa. His name will also be listed in the 2022 edition of the Patrician’s Last Post section, published in March 2023. Thank you for obviously supporting Joseph in the many pursuits that he got into after the army. Thank you all.
