CHYNOWETH, Shirley Kathryn

June 18, 1935 - January 13, 2022

Shirley passed away peacefully at the Bow-Crest Long Term Care home on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the age of 86 years.

Born in Kindersley, Sask. Shirley was the eldest of two girls and was raised on a farm in the Smiley district. After graduating from school she moved to Saskatoon to attend teachers college, graduating in 1954. In 1966 after a brief career in teaching she journeyed to Calgary to raise her five children.

Shirley was a strong, hard working woman. One of her many passions was cooking and baking. She worked at a long term care home and the Calgary Co-op as a cook as well as owning her own restaurant for awhile. She later started a career as a care giver, and a good one at that. Shirley was well in demand to care for families loved ones and did so into her seventies.

Once retired Shirley would go to the weekly seniors exercise classes and frequently let us know how many squats she did. As an avid reader she volunteered for Calgary Reads tutoring grade two children in reading, as well as teaching them how to give and receive her great hugs.

Shirley had a green thumb and loved her plants and gardening. If you had a sick plant she would be the one to bring it back for you. And shopping, she loved to shop and find the deals and would always have something on hand to give someone on a special occasion. Winter was known as curling season as Shirley loved to curl up and watch it on TV all winter long.

Shirley was known for her generous heart, sense of humour and love of life. She lived life giving and doing for others and found joy in doing so. She was a very special person who was kind to everyone she met.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by three children, Ken (Alanna) Chynoweth, Jacqui (Maria) Chynoweth and Shanna Chynoweth. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Ray Zook; sons, Trent and Perry; as well as sister Joan Hilderbrant.

In Loving Memory of Shirley Chynoweth a tree will be planted at Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation area.

If friends so desire memorial tributes may be sent to the Heart and Stroke foundation, 100, 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.

Shirley was a caregiver for my grandmother, Letha Mae Seaman, for many years, at her home & continued at Wentworth Manor until she passed in 2006. Shirley became a part of my family & I have stayed in touch throughout the years. Shanna, I am so terribly sorry. You will miss her terribly. You have been an incredible daughter to your mother & must be proud of yourself. She is in a better place now, Shanna. Her life was not easy since her stroke but she was amazingly positive. You were so good to her. Nice that you will have no regrets. Much love, Heather Brenneman

Sending my sincere sympathy to Shirley's family. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Shirley. She came to my school as a Calgary Reads volunteer.
