Alexander Ingram Slack

December 9, 1937 - August 28, 2019

Our beloved husband, Dad and Grandpa passed away at the age of 81 in Calgary, Alberta after a courageous lengthy battle against prostate cancer. He passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side. Alex is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; two adoring children, Paul Slack (and his wife Cindy) and Justine Baumgart (and her husband Kelly); his three lovely grandchildren, Reed, Caden and Ailee and several nieces and nephews. Alex was predeceased by his parents, Janet Russell Ingram and Alexander Park Slack (Glasgow, Scotland) and his sisters, Margaret Campbell Slack (Glasgow, Scotland) and Mary Brown Morgan (Jersey, Channel Islands). Alex was born in Glasgow, Scotland where he scrapped his way through technical college to become a draftsman. In Glasgow he met his sweetheart, Elizabeth, who were both avid ballroom dancers and together they won many amateur ballroom competitions including the Alberta Senior Ballroom Championship. His career took him to London, England and then to Calgary, Alberta in addition to many other locations. Alex’s many interests, apart from ballroom dancing, included walking, watching English Premier League Football, quoting Robbie Burns, history and theology. Alex was a selfless man, who cared deeply for his family and those that crossed his path. We know with his passing that he is no longer in pain but selfishly we would give anything to have more time with this sweet man. A celebration of Alex’s life will be held at the Marda Loop Community Association Hall (3130 16th Street SW, Calgary) on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 10:30 am. If friends so desire, donations may be made directly to the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre (prostatecancercentre.ca/support-us/). The family would like to thank the Bow Crest Long Term Care Home, Dr. B. Donnelly and the Foothills Hospital Unit 72 including the Palliative Consult Service (especially Dr. M. LaBrie and Richelle) for the compassion and care they showed to Alex through his illness. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.myalternatives.ca.

"Had we never lov'd sae kindly, Had we never lov'd sae blindly, Never met - or never parted - we had ne'er been broken-hearted". (Robbie Burns)

Messages:

I was deeply moved to hear of Alex's passing. We worked together at Exchanger Industries for 16 years. Always so dependable, knowledgeable and committed to his company and colleagues even throughout his illness. I'll always remember his lively stories and infectious laugh. He will be missed but not forgotten and a part of him remains ever so present in his wonderful children and grand children.

Alex and my dad Felix shared room 108 at Bow Crest. We were so sad the day we found out Alex had passed away. He was such a kind considerate man. With deepest sympathy to the Slack family, Carol & Niels Hansen ; Felix Bosch

My heart aches for you Liz along with your children. It's hard to believe, his sense of Scottish humor cheered the dullest of days. I feel extremely fortunate to have met Alex and Liz, after opening up "The International Ballroom", in Calgary. You were both so supportive, helping in every way they could. I always admired their grace as they flowed across the dance floor as one. Wonderful people there are not enough words to express how I feel. What a blessing to have such a gentle and enthusiastic couple in my life, I feel so honored. We have lost touch over they years, but how could I ever forget you. Hang on in there Liz, Alex wants you to. Thank you for inviting me out for his "Celebration of Life", love you, Sheila (formally, Sullivan)

So very sorry to hear about Alex's passing. We lived in Dalhousie and often came across Alex at the Northland Mall. He always took the time to have a friendly chat and his calm and gentle character left one believing he is all goodness. "The things you do for yourself die with you, however, the things you do with others will always remain". A man to be celebrated.

To the entire Slack family, when I sit hear and think about Alex, I remember him as a person who was open, non-judgemental, down to earth and a willingness to spend time conversing. I can imagine that such a person left fond memories with you all. I am sorry for your loss. Alex, thank you for spending time with us on our visits to Calgary. Thank you for finding common ground with me during conversations I had with you, you made me feel heard and I appreciate that. God Bless you and your family.

So sad to hear of Alex's passing. He was a great guy to work with, always cheerful, patient and caring. We will miss his smiling face even more now.
