Joyce Alice Schmidtler

December 22nd, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Joyce Alice Schmidtler on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 1:25 PM.  Born December 5, 1938 in Moncton NB to Herbert and Alice Woodard and raised just outside of Montreal where she was to meet her one true love, Hans Georg (George) Schmidtler to whom she was predeceased by in July of 2000.  Married in 1961, they would raise 4 kids.  They moved from Montreal, lived throughout Ontario, before finally settling in Calgary in 1975 where they ran a successful plumbing business for many years.  We will always have fond memories of family camping in the summer and ski trips in the winter.  Although they divorced after 30 years, they created a loving, caring, if not boisterous home and remained in each other’s hearts for the rest of their days.  Mom always had an enduring love for her children.  She sometimes let her nature get in the way of her love, but the love always won out in the end.

Mom met many people through her association with the Lions Club of Canada.  Mom and Dad were active members for many years in the Calgary Southwest Lions Club.  Upon returning to Calgary after a short time back in Montreal and later Edmonton (but we won’t hold that against her) she rejoined the Lions.  Her many years of service with the Lions brought her great joy.

Mom recently lost her sister, Sharon Marcum of Toronto on October 29th.  Left to mourn her passing are her four children, Sandy (Dirk), Mike (Sherri), Brigitte (Gary) and Geoff (Michelle); her grandchildren, Brad and Amanda (Sandy), Chris and Luke (Mike) and Hayley and Karah (Geoff); along with numerous nieces, nephews, former in-laws and grand-furkids (Jules, Bella, Iyk, Daisy and Teddy).  Her beloved brother, Bryan Woodard of Penticton, BC who was her rock and the person to whom she would share her life stories with is the sole remaining sibling in her family of six Woodard children.  She is fondly remembered and missed by her closest and dearest friend Marg of Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Salvation Army as this is the one charity that Mom greatly believed in.

Given the unfortunate timing of Mom’s passing during COVID restrictions, we look forward to an intimate gathering of friends and family to celebrate Mom’s life when we’re able to gather again.
